Abstract


This article proposes that international human rights law, in particular, provides a working template for achieving desired positive ends in the relationship of the state, the local communities and the MNCs through the institutionalisation of economic, social and cultural rights with the active participation of MNCs. Repressive measures can only exacerbate the volatile situation in the Niger Delta with serious consequences, not only for Nigeria and the MNCs, but for the international community as well. There is a threat of civil war in the region.
